Situated in the Eastern Europe, on the east side of Poland, Belarus is geologically well endowed with extensive deposits of granite, dolomitic limestone, marl, chalk, sand, gravel, and clay. Belarus attained its independence from Russia in the year 1991, after seven decades of integrity, but it has retained its close political and economic ties with Russia. The main industries of Belarus are metal-cutting machine tools, tractors, trucks, earthmovers, motorcycles, television sets, chemical fibers, fertilizer, textiles, radios, refrigerators, etc. Belarus is actively engaged in the export of machinery and equipment, mineral products, chemicals, metals, textiles, and diverse foodstuffs. Its agriculture supports the production of grain, potatoes, vegetables, sugar beets, flax, beef, and milk.
