Italy has been at the forefront of the European economic and political unification, and joined the European Monetary Union in the year 1999. The strategic location of Italy dominates the Central Mediterranean, as well as the Southern sea and air approaches to the Western Europe.
Italy has a diversified industrial economy with approximately the same total and per capita output as France and the UK. This capitalistic economy remains divided into a developed industrial north, dominated by the private companies; and a less developed, welfare-dependent agricultural south, with about 20% unemployment. Most of the raw materials required by the industry, and more than 75% of its energy requirements are regularly imported.
Over the past decade, Italy has scrupulously pursued a tight fiscal policy, in order to meet the needs of the Economic and Monetary Unions, and has benefited from the lower interest and inflation rates.
