Industrial sector encompasses food processing, chemicals, petroleum refining, and electrical machinery. Its highly mechanized agricultural sector employs only 4% of its labor force, but provides huge surpluses for the food-processing industry and for its exports.

Netherlands continues to be one of the leading European countries for enticing foreign direct investment. The economic growth of Netherlands slowed considerably during 2001-03, due to the global economic slowdown, but for the four years before that, its annual growth averaged at 4%, which is well above the EU average.
